Aronia: Food and Medicine

Aronia has arrived in Europe from the eastern part of North America. The Indians were familiar with it. They dried its fruits and used them as food and medicine. Besides the fruits, the leaves and bark of aronia were also used.

Aronia berries are rich in nutrients and healing substances. They contain from 25 to 30 % of dry matter, most of it are saccharides, fructose from 6.2 to 10.8 %, cellulose from 3.0 to 3, 1 %, pectin from 0.63 to 0.75 %, organic acids from 0.7 to 1.3%, and anthocyanin (600-2300 mg %). They are abundant in macro and microelements ( 1.55 % ) such as iron, calcium, copper, iodine, boron, molybdenum , manganese , potassium, and cobalt , as well as vitamins C , P , PP , B6 , B2 , E and provitamin A. However, out of all things that can be found in the fruits of chokeberry, the most important ones are pigments, anthocyanins . It has been found that there is 1480mg of anthocyanins per 100g of fresh fruit, while the concentration of proanthocyanidins is 664mg per 100g. They mostly occur in and under the skin of the berry. In this way the plant protects its content, flesh and seeds of the fruit, from the harmful effects of UV radiation. The color and gloss of berries attract birds and other animals that feed on them, thus performing dispensing and spreading of the species. Ripe black raspberry takes the second place for abundance in anthocyanins, with about 320mg per 100g of fruit, while the black currant has about 250mg and blackberries 205mg per 100g of fruit.

Thanks to such composition, aronia represents a cure as well as food which reduces the risk of many diseases, such as cancer of the colon, inactive liver, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammations, gastrointestinal problems and ulcers, and eye inflammation (uveitis). It strengthens the immune system which makes it good food –a medicine for children, athletes and convalescents. Furthermore, it slows down the aging process and has an antiseptic effect.

Healing properties

Anti-cancer effect
Aronia kills a high percentage of malignant cells in a brain tumor, lung, colon and liver cancer (anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins ) .

Antioxidants
Aronia prevents the formation of free radicals and degeneration of healthy cells in human tissues and blood plasma, and consequently slows down the aging process of the organism (tannins, flavonoids, vitamin C, and vitamin E).

Head
Aronia improves blood circulation in the blood vessels of the head and helps prevent headaches and migraines, inhibits the development of atherosclerosis and creates strong protection against the onset of dementia and the development of Alzheimer's disease ( anthocyanins , vitamin P).

Heart
Aronia reduces high blood pressure, returns the bad cholesterol to normal and promotes the growth of the good one. It enables a quick recovery after a heart attack or a stroke, regenerates fine arterial muscle tissue and increases its elasticity. Moreover, it improves myocardial blood flow by encouraging the creation of a network of fine blood vessels after losing the use of old ones, and it creates complete protection against clogging ( anthocyanin , biophenols , vitamin P) .

Urinary tract
Aronia cures urinary tract infections (5 to 10 times more efficient than the Canadian cranberries) and inflammation of the prostate (proantocianidins ).

Immune system boost
Aronia prevents bacterial and viral infections (the common cold, flu ...) ( biophenols , vitamin A, C, B2, B6, B9 , ... E, and very rare Vitamin P) .

Endocrine glands
Aronia enhances the secretion of hormones and regulates the function of the thyroid gland. It also regulates blood sugar, hemoglobin in the blood, the functioning of the pancreas, and treats diabetes. It contains rare fruit sugar SORBITOL which helps dietetic nutrition (sorbitol, anthocyanin).

Blood and blood vessels
Aronia improves blood count and purifies the blood, improves circulation, reduces high blood pressure , lowers bad cholesterol and regulates blood sugar, increases the elasticity of blood vessels ( especially important for diabetic ) and prevents them from clogging , prevents atherosclerosis and reduces problems with inflamed and distended veins ( Flavonoids, vitamin P , proanthocyanidin , biophenols ) .

Stomach
Aronia soothes cramps, stomach pain, and inflammation of the lining of the stomach, helps with gastric ulcer and gastric neurosis (anthocyanin).

Intestines
Aronia soothes cramps and pain in the bowels, it soothes inflammation of the lining of the intestines and stops diarrhea.

Liver and gall bladder
Aronia improves liver function and bile secretion, cleans the liver from fat, regenerates it and it can even cure and regulate the inflammation of the gallbladder and bile ducts, jaundice, biliary sand and gallstone in some severe diseases (phenols, flavonoids).

Eyes
Aronia improves eyesight, heals macular degeneration, protects your eyes from UV rays, and prevents the formation of cataracts (anthocyanin, vitamin P, and beta-carotene).

Skin
Aronia increases flexibility and significantly reduces the presence of wrinkles and stretch marks , removes dark spots from the sun and cracked capillaries, refreshes the skin, slows down aging (vitamin E , beta-carotene , flavonoids ).

Body cleansing
Aronia binds to heavy metals and radioactive elements in the body and allows their excretion which is most useful after the exposure to the radiation in post-operative therapy (massively used after the Chernobyl accident to reduce the symptoms of most exposed officials).

Wounds
Aronia reduces wound healing time, and disinfects them which is especially important in the postoperative period ( biophenols, vitamin P, C and E).
